Refund & Cancellation Policy

Draft pending legal review. The rules below describe how refunds actually work in the product today; final wording will be confirmed with counsel before launch.

This policy covers everything you can pay Legally Rent for: the rental-agreement bundle, government stamp duty collected with it, and the Pro subscription. It is operated by Chaosology Technologies Private Limited. Refund requests and questions: [email protected].

1. The two kinds of money in a lease payment

When you pay for a rental agreement, the amount has two parts, and they behave differently on refund:

  • Our service fee (the bundle price plus GST) — pays for document drafting, Aadhaar KYC, e-stamp handling and Aadhaar e-sign.
  • Government stamp duty — collected at the exact state-computed amount and passed through to the government when the stamp paper is purchased. It is shown as a separate line at checkout and on your invoice. It is not our revenue.

2. Rental agreement bundle — refund stages

  • Before the stamp paper is purchased: you can cancel for a full refund — service fee, GST and stamp duty included. Because we usually buy the stamp within one business day of everyone completing Aadhaar verification, ask as early as possible.
  • After the stamp paper is purchased: the stamp duty and our fees for services already rendered or initiated (e-stamp, e-sign, KYC, document generation) are non-refundable. A purchased stamp certificate is issued in the parties’ names and cannot be reused or returned by us.
  • If we fail to deliver: if the failure is on our side (we cannot issue your stamped, signed agreement), you get a full refund including stamp duty — no questions.
  • Duplicate or failed payments: refunded automatically to the original payment method. If you see a double charge, contact us with the payment reference.

3. Pro subscription

  • Cancel anytime from your account — cancellation stops future renewals.
  • Monthly plans: the current month is not refunded; you keep access until the period ends.
  • Annual plans: fully refundable within 14 days of purchase; pro-rated for the unused months after that.

4. Tenant verification reports

A background-verification report is non-refundable once the tenant has given consent and the checks have started, because the underlying verifications are purchased from providers at that moment. If a report fails to complete on our side, it is not charged (or is refunded in full).

5. How refunds are paid

Approved refunds go back to the original payment method via Razorpay, typically within 5–7 business days of approval (your bank may take a few days more to show it). We’ll confirm by email when the refund is initiated.

6. How to ask

Email [email protected] with the payment reference (or invoice number) and the property/lease name. Unresolved complaints can be escalated via our Grievance Redressal process.
